Taking action for human rights in the 21st century

This book brings together the contributions of several intellectuals and influential politicians in the world to reflect on the future of human rights in the 21st century. The author addresses the problem of dignity. which is the thing shared by humanity, so the basic objective of any declaration of human rights must be primarily to protect the human dignity. Here is how Federico Mayor, Director-General from 1987 to 1999, introduced the book:

In keeping with UNESCO mandate, I have taken the initiative of collecting together a number of ideas that might help us in taking action for human rights in the twenty-first century. I asked very different kinds of people - winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. scientists, writers, heads of large non-governmental organizations. artists. philosophers - to write a short text putting forward an idea. These concrete proposals highlight essential aspects of the action that needs to be taken in support of human rights in the coming years. r In these pages. each writer speaks only for himself or herself. No school of thought f or official line can be discerned in this series of proposals. On the contrary, this collection f reveals a real diversity and freedom of tone which, in its way. marks a new departure for human rights. The half-century that has just gone by is only the beginning. The history of human rights has hardly started. We must not be content merely to celebrate a founding act - that is already old. First and foremost. it is a matter of setting in motion the work that needs to be done over the coming years. If the suggestions set forth in these pages were all put into action in the near future. we would surely see a less inhumane world.
